Phobias and Anxiety

Having a Phobia is much more than simply being scared of something.  To the person suffering from the Phobia the level of intense fear and anxiety can begin to take over their lives.  They begin to organise their activities to avoid the object of fear. Avoiding snakes may be easy to do in the UK, however, a fear of birds may be totally disabling and lead to the sufferer becoming housebound.

The need to avoid the object that you are afraid of becomes overwhelming and nothing else matters, except the need to get away.

As I can only to well relate to, after stripping my clothes off in a public park, because a spider fell out of a tree and landed on me.  All of this was accompanied by me screaming and shouting “get it off me!” at the very top of my voice.   The people staring at me didn’t matter, or the embarrassment I would later feel, all that mattered was making sure that the Spider wasn’t on me.

Two Types of Phobias:

  • Simple Phobia
  • Complex Phobia

The simple phobia is a phobia of specific objects, animals, situations or activities, such as:

  • Dogs
  • Flying
  • Driving
  • Fire

Where as, the complex phobia can be more disabling because they are connected to a very deep anxiety about particular circumstances, situations or past experiences.

  • Agoraphobia
  • Social Phobia
